full circle on Google Maps reviews

Kokubunji, 2025.09.15

For some reason, I tend to write reviews of places when Google Maps asks me to. As a result, Google tells me I'm in the top 10% of all their reviewers of restaurants and I'm coming up on "level six" in their parlance. I don't know what signifies, but a couple of years ago they offered me a discount on a Pixel 7a smartphone, which I suspect they knew I had just bought. So, to whoop-de-doo!

Anyway, today I joined Mari in going to an eye-wear place in Kunitachi where the guy who runs the place has that business in his blood. I have never seen anything like the guy's dedication to his clients and products. And by that specifically I mean that I misunderstood the Japanese-language explanation for 'trifocal', which I didn't know was a thing, for 'bifocal', and when I told him the trifocals were causing me to be dizzy he replaced the lenses free of charge. At that time I wrote a review explaining my thoughts on that store in English on Google Maps. When we walked in today, he knew immediately who I was .. because my English-language commentary has been drawing the gaijin crowd as far away as Ome and the 23-wards in the city center. I just needed new lenses for my scratched reading glasses but he was feeling generous with the discounts. Mari also noted that he and his staff are using more English now.
