movie review - Transformers One

Kokubunji, 2025.07.18

For movie night, The Girl wanted to watch this. I'm honestly not sure where she might have heard of it, but it turned up on our Prime account so away we went.

It is the best Transformers movie I have ever seen. Well written, well acted, very well animated, we enjoyed it. It tells a story that has been central to the conflict in the series since day one; why the honorable Optimus Prime and rage-fueled Megatron descended from friendship to an animosity that consume them for hundreds of years.

There are some problems, of course. The not-yet-bumblebee character was an annoying distraction that failed to hits its mark as The Smart Guy in the five man band, but also wasn't either the weird one or the small one. Not everything has to fit a trope but this character just sort of pinged around being either dull or incredibly destructive. Like having a bored RPG player who insists that they are Chaotic Neutral. The main character is also barely more than a job description. This is fine in that it gives the villain more room to shine, but it feels like a missed opportunity.

But then they brought in Buscemi as Starscream.

Recommended.
