the battleship island

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Nagasaki, 2024.09.28

Today I visited the ruling queen of 'haikyo' in Japan: abandoned sites. It's the island now known as 'the battleship island' due to its appearance, but it was formerly the mining town of Hashima. It was, for some decades, the home of 5,000 people as the coal mine below the island expanded. And by "expanded", I mean the mining tunnels connected with those of other nearby sites and also to a depth of 1,100 meters.

rand()m quote

Immature poets imitate mature poets steal bad poets deface what they take and good poets make it into something better or at least something different. The good poet welds his theft into a whole of feeling which is unique utterly different than that from which it is torn the bad poet throws it into something which has no cohesion. A good poet will usually borrow from authors remote in time or alien in language or diverse in interest.
