twenty-eight years and a million words

This is a story about a family of horse-trainers who formerly had a good livelihood providing horses for Hollywood. They're no longer in favor, however, and are on hard times. Then the aliens make their presence known with a harrowing attack on the farmstead that seemingly takes one of the horses.

What follows is a fairly original story in which the main mystery is puzzled out. I really like what they did with the main story. But I also appreciated the context of a major on-set animal disaster that impacted not only the horse-raising family but another family in the valley. As things progress, more Hollywood types are drawn into the story, and it's interesting to see how these various parties interact with the novel situation.

Strongly recommended.

... I'll let you in on a secret. Big people are exactly the same as little people. They're selfish, squabbling children whose motivations are jealousy and greed. No one becomes big when the hit adulthood. They just become better at hiding how small they are.
