no fireworks for tokyo

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Kokubunji, 2024.07.20

We had a bit of an adventure this afternoon. I took The Boy to get a haircut, then suggested that we pick up some drinks and snacks. He suggested the local grocery, which had been remodeled. On the way, it began to rain just a bit, and I told him, "This is going to get much worse. A shower at least." We made it to the grocery store and I said, "Take your time, this could be a while."

We were there for forty-five minutes. I'd already been twice since the remodeling and hadn't found the new home of kimchi. On this lengthy visit, I noticed they had a whole kimchi section, albeit at the far side of the store from before the remodeling. Definitely worth being trapped.

The rain went on and on, and I spoke with Mari. She suggested she come get us, but the rain had let up before she arrived. At least to the point that The Boy took off on his own. I waited around but we decided to head back separately.

I have no idea how much it rained, but there was constant lightning as well.

In the news that evening: the big fireworks festival on the Ara river on the other side of the city had also been wiped out. A shame, really.
