movie review - Orion and the Dark

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Kokubunji, 2024.07.14

We watched this animated Netflix movie for movie night. It's about a boy who is afraid of the dark and winds up meeting the spirit of nocturnal darkness who circles the globe endlessly bringing relief from the relentless sun. The spirit, called "Dark" is accompanied by a number of lesser spirits with certain abilities. They take the boy on a ride around the world.

I enjoyed the innovative animation and the reasonable geography as they visit real places that are presented properly -- whether it's Tokyo, India, or the Sahara. I thought the way the various spirits were dissatisfied with their life made sense in the context. And I felt that the way the various tensions were resolved felt authentic. It's a bit rough in parts, but on the whole it's good to watch with the kids.

Recommended.

P.S. We're having a small break from the relentless heat of the past few weeks, it's only 30º this evening. Though the overnight lows have only been 24º.
