movie review - Meg 2: The Trench

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Kokubunji, 2024.06.02

This is a worthy sequel to the surprisingly good "high concept" movie about the return of the prehistoric Otodus Megaladon to the seas. In this installment, there's way more human-on-human struggle as it turns out that the deep sea trench that's been harboring the enormous sharks is now being exploited by mineral resource companies. The bad guys are bad, the good guys are badder, and the sharks, well.

The story is appropriately bat-shit. The tone, while decidedly darker than in the first, keeps things grounded with just the right hint of tongue-in-cheek to allow for serious conflict while everyone's got one eye on the surrounds for sharks large enough to swallow a kitchen table. I think the nastier tone of this one suited the fact that the heroes spend a good deal of time on the seabed in complete darkness. I liked that they avoided the ridiculous pitfall of the Jurassic Park movies that attributed impossible intelligence and collaborative skills to the monsters. I thought the casting choices were superb.

Recommended.
