Here's an interesting idea. Life may have been seeded on Earth. According the observable rate of development of complex life forms, the planet hasn't been around long enough for our level of complexity to exist now. We'd have needed an extra 4-5 billion years. So how did Earth do it? By being populated with life-bearing debris from space.
