movie review - Something in the Dirt

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Kokubunji, 2023.09.30

This is an interesting story about two neighbors in a small apartment building in Los Angeles who investigate some crazy phenomenon after one of them witnesses some unnatural light the unexplained levitation of household objects.

I enjoyed the off-beat story-telling, which gradually reveals the nature of the characters but not the phenomenon. The growing antagonism and arrogance from one of them, and the gradual beating-down of the other is interesting, as is the context of a Los Angeles that seems to harbor a great del more behind-the-scenes goings on that and usually depicted in that notoriously shallow city. This isn't an easy watch, with uneven pacing and more ideas than honesty toward the viewer. We are deliberately not told what's really happening and we have to live with that.

Recommended.

P.S. I noticed after writing this that it is my 1,000th capsule review of a movie. I wonder if I have another 1,000 in me, the first thousand took twenty-six years, nine months.
