movie review - Nimona

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Kokubunji, 2023.07.01

This is a movie about a knight whos act of knighthood is sabotaged by a violent act of terrorism that causes him to unwittingly kill the city's monarch. He loses an arm in the process and is imprisoned. So we've established a man-in-a-hole plot, and I'm here for it as the kids say. But a twist then occurs, and that is he's sprung from jail by a shape-shifting lunatic character who may likely be bent on the complete destruction of the city.

After that it's a blend of man-in-a-hole and copy buddy movie, skinned with visible and sexual minorities flavors as is our wont these days. I did quite enjoy the way the real story is teased out against the high-speed action and urgency, and I do indeed like a Chaotic Neutral character as our titular lunatic appears to be.

Recommended.

rand()m quote

The man who lies to himself and listens to his own lie comes to such a pass that he cannot distinguish the truth within him, or around him, and so loses all respect for himself and for others. And having no respect he ceases to love, and in order to occupy and distract himself without love he gives way to passions and coarse pleasures, and sinks to bestiality in his vices, all from continual lying to other men and to himself.

—Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Brothers Karamazov
