to the aquarium!
the journal of Michael Werneburg
twenty-seven years and one million words
Today, we headed north to the famous aquarium on the north-west shore of the island. It's a big place with a singularly huge aquarium that features a whale-shark, but also outdoor exhibits featuring dolphins, sea turtles, and manatees. It was the first time I'd seen the latter in public, and if anything they're even softer and more upholstered-looking than I'd have guessed. They raise and release the turtles at that aquarium, and I suppose our admission fees support those activities.
After that, we crossed the top of that part of the island, heading for a long bridge that connects a smaller island to the mainland. Along the way, we spotted a cafe on the beach and did a quick u-turn. Pulling in past some abandoned greenhouses, we found a typical Okinawan concrete bunker. Inside was not only a good cafe but they had crafts thing set up for people to make the little guard dog/dragon things that appear on virtually every property in the land.
Crafty! Of course, our eleven-year-old had to make one, so the rest of us had some time to explore.
The beach. Gorgeous. The dog thing made, we carried on.
And then "home".
We went to a Hawaiian BBQ place that only had take-away and ate on the beach.
