to the circus!

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Kokubunji, 2023.01.15

Today we went to a 120-year-old circus. There were some really amazing segments. One of our favorites had two fellows who went around in a giant rotating contraption that had rings at either end. At first they would run back and forth within the rings, but soon one was scrambling around the outside, maybe twenty meters above the ground, while his comrade would take flying leaps within in his ring. It was shocking how fast they'd go. There was a trapeze act, a juggler, all the usuals - plus the big steel cage in which three(!) motorcyclists raced in tight circles.

One thing we agreed that they could do without was the animals. Why are they still trotting out lions and a zebra in 2023. Unnecessary when all we can really think of is the condition of the animals.
