pushing people onto trains

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-eight years and a million words

Kokubunji, 2023.12.08

They say you no longer see the staff at train stations pushing people onto trains in Tokyo, but you do indeed. I saw it this morning on a train so crowded I could barely believe it. It happened at Musashi-Sakai, one of the sleepiest stops on the line.

Three good things that happened today:

  1. I am going back to Fukuoka to see my staff there on the 17th.
  2. It's good to be able to put together a year-end review and be impressed with your own team's work
  3. My latest watch build turned out to be underwhelming but I have the most flexible type of movement in the thing and the case takes 28.5mm dials. The world is my oyster.
Three reasons to be thankful:

  1. Life in Japan can be a drag but on the whole I think less so than Canada.
  2. We've still got our health, my paycheck's in the mail.
  3. The worst of the train's crowding is past.

Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.
