watching old TV

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Kokubunji, 2022.11.30

I've been watching "Star Trek Deep Space Nine", lately. It's a thirty-year-old show now and I've come to realize that I really never watched most of it the first time around. Primarily, I suspect because I was in university but also because we didn't have a TV. I'm enjoying the hopeful vibe and the relative positivity compared to what passes for Star Trek now. I can only hope that the simple storytelling and consistent characters and lack of sneering self-destructive cynicism can somehow come back.

rand()m quote

The man who lies to himself and listens to his own lie comes to such a pass that he cannot distinguish the truth within him, or around him, and so loses all respect for himself and for others. And having no respect he ceases to love, and in order to occupy and distract himself without love he gives way to passions and coarse pleasures, and sinks to bestiality in his vices, all from continual lying to other men and to himself.

—Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Brothers Karamazov
