The Girl has a new aqaurium

We went more than two years in this house without an aquarium, ending a run of about fifteen years of continuous aquarium-keeping. Then two weekends ago, The Girl caught some goldfish at a street festival, and suddenly we're committed to keeping fish once again. I initially transferred them from a cheap bag that couldn't even be sealed to a drinking bottle, then to a soft-sided fishing bag. The kids decided they wanted a real aquarium so here we are. This time around we're going with a sand substrate, an external canister filter, and a bubbler.
It's a standard "60cm" aquarium, holding 57 liters or 12.5 gallons. One of the wee fish (which I estimated to be about ten weeks old at the time Emma won them) died last weekend before we assembled the aquarium, but the other two are doing well and I'm monitoring the water quality closely because of course the new gear hasn't cycled and there shall be ammonia. A <60L aquarium is not enough space for two goldfish so at some point those fish will have to move on. There's a local store that deals primarily in goldfish and koi, I suspect they would take them. We'll see. For now The Girl is very happy.
