movie review - Pig

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Kokubunji, 2022.06.21

This is an off-beat movie about a former star chef who now lives in a shack in the hills with his truffle pig. When his pig is stolen by violent unknown parties, he descends from the hills to find his companion and resume his life of solitude. This throws him back into the world of the restauranteurs and some fairly unlikely scenarios along the way.

I enjoyed the unusual concept, the amazing work of the lead actor, and the parts of the story that rang true. What I didn't so much enjoy was the over-the-top villainy of the behind-the-scenes antagonist, the entire underground fight club that inexplicably decides things in the culinary world, and the over-the-top indulgence in the food experience. But perhaps when you have a character who lives in near-total isolation, you have to have something to flesh out the run-time because trying to retrieve a stolen pig can only occupy so much time.

I was on the fence about this, but then asked myself: would I watch it again? No, I don't think so.

Not recommended.
