movie review - Ad Astra

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Kokubunji, 2022.04.24

This is an interesting work of Science Fiction that starts with its main character falling off a sky hook and then follows him to every miserable corner of a future that's at once dystopian but also somewhat grounded and optimistic but not in a Star Trek way. More like, corporate projections optimistic, in that they are colorless and say more of the dead nature of their dreamers than the dream.

There are some interesting scenes but the story didn't feel real, somehow. Like I couldn't buy the motivations of the main character or all the grim douche-bags he encounters along the way. I mean, there's not one bit of warmth anywhere in this thing.

Not recommended.
