movie review - Hilda and the Mountain King

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Kokubunji, 2022.01.22

This is an animated story of a human girl who wakes up to discover she's become a troll. I later learned that it was a story continued from a TV series, but found that that didn't matter much. She realizes she has to get back to her human town, but of course has to deal with the issue of her transformation - because she's now a naked homunculus rather than an actual human. To do that, she makes a bargain with the dubious Mountain King, a massive troll that rules the underground.

Meanwhile, our heroine's been replaced at home somewhat by a troll baby and that's leading to its own challenges. Not least of which is that the town is caught up in a mania and the police are developing weapons to seriously up the perceived struggle with the trolls.

The voice acting is great, the story is engaging, and we quite enjoyed this one.

Strongly recommended.
