the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Kokubunji, 2021.12.30

I can't believe how exhausted I became this year. I've been off a full week now and barely feel rested. And I regret that I'm so far from my family, and that simply making a living has driven me to this. But, it seems to be quite good for Mari and the kids, and it's good to be saving money again after more than a decade. I'm working with a coach provided through work, and I've asked that our interactions be all about finding balance and making things work. Because I'll need it if I'm to survive. I moved from Canada last year as the pandemic began and joined my new employer two days before the lock-down. I was bumped into a new role with more responsibility about seven months later, and then again much more dramatically three months after that. I was thrown into a tsunami of work and I've made a go of it but I'm well aware that I'm the sixth person to hold the role in eight years and that a lot of things have to go right simultaneously and by gum that wasn't happening in 2021.

It's nice to have Mari's family about. Her sister and her kids have joined us today, we'll have a fairly large New Year's eve, it seems, with nine of us.

There are two kinds of people in this world: Those that enter a room and turn the television set on, and those that enter a room and turn the television set off.
