checking out houses with my gal

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Kokubunji, 2021.02.20

After we'd had our bentou, we dragged The Girl into see some open houses that were freshly built in a quiet corner of our neighborhood. They cost around 35 million yen, which is currently $420,000. Which is about the size of a down-payment for a hundred-year-old house in Toronto.

But we'll have a hard time buying in this country. I could likely come up with the 30% down-payment, but I'm not a permanent resident so there's little chance a bank would be interested.

There's always the option of sinking my savings in Canada into something there but then I'd need tenants and I'd open myself up to reporting taxes in Japan and Canada which sounds like a nightmare.

So I guess I'll rent forever.
