movie review - Space Sweepers

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Kokubunji, 2021.02.09

This is a Korean piece of Sci-Fi that I quite enjoyed. It's about some salvagers that live in an orbital, retrieving space junk for whatever price they can get. And like any citizen of Toronto knows from the legion of speeding monster freelance tow-trucks on the streets, speed is the key in claiming a tow. Anyway, the crew encounters a small child in one of these wrecks, and she turns out to be a living weapon, and all hell breaks loose.

I liked the setting, it's an interesting take on the future where we trash the planet but are still scraping by. I liked the characters, they're somewhat standard fair for Sci-Fi or action movies, but it's an endearing mob nonetheless. And I liked the way the story plays out. It's an engaging movie.

Recommended.

rand()m quote

Remove everything that has no relevance to the story. If you say in the first chapter that there is a rifle hanging on the wall, in the second or third chapter it absolutely must go off. If it's not going to be fired, it shouldn't be hanging there.

—Anton Chekhov
