movie review - Serenity

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Kokubunji, 2021.02.04

"Take me out into the black, tell 'em I ain't coming back." I was a fan of the obscure, short-run TV series Firefly, and was quite surprised when they put out this movie almost out of a sense of contractual obligation or something. I saw it with my brother and sister-in-law in the cinema when it came out, and thought well enough of it then. On this viewing, with the kids for "Movie night" I was less impressed. It has the feeling of a made-for-TV movie through and through. And rushed. It feels rushed. Maybe it should have been a mini-series.

There was on rather clever scene that's still impressing me upon reflection: the pilot is taking the ship into a three-dimensional battlefield and the captain just points at some impending obstacle and says, "no. no. no." while the pilot carries on.

Not recommended. Which is a drag.

rand()m quote

Selfish leaders increase risk by placing themselves first. It's a fundamental mistake to assume that what is good for us personally is mutually exclusive to what is good for everyone. That kind of zero-sum game is for cowards, and in the end, we all pay the price for this type of latent, toxic leadership.
