movie review - Animal Crackers

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Kokubunji, 2020.12.05

For "Movie Night" my daughter and I watched this one. It's about a family of circus owners and the terrible arc that begins when the current owners are killed in a trailer fire and their orphan son is left in the care of people who don't have the best interests of the circus at heart. A box of animal crackers turns up, and these have the ability to transform our hero into the shape represented by the cracker. The inventor of the crackers is still turning out mad science, and an international cast of accents shows up to flesh out the cast as we careen through a surprisingly coherent story. It's a good "family movie" and that's about it.

(Along the way we eventually figure out that the parents were in animal form the night of the fire. Not the same species, but yeah. It's a bit nasty, but I guess I could see how the thought would occur.)

Not recommended.
