movie review - The Goonies

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Kokubunji, 2020.11.28

This is the '80s classic featuring a bunch of kids who decide to explore a house where they think some evil-doing is afoot. The find a mentally handicapped fellow chained to the wall at one point, but the real villainy is what they have in mind and they think they're there to break up a crime ring so they leave the poor fellow to his plight. Pursued by the villainous family they're "investigating", they also deal with teenage matters like sexist boyfriends and sibling squabbling. Their quest leads to pirate gold and the big finale.

It's well enough acted by a young cast that would become known for their various struggles and in one case for wiping out half of all sentient beings in the galaxy. I'm happy to report that it held up fairly well, all in.

Recommended.

I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops.
