movie review - Extraction
the journal of Michael Werneburg
twenty-seven years and one million words
This was a surprisingly good action film about a mercenary who's sent into Bangladesh to extract a kidnapped child. I found the story-telling good, I liked the main character for not only his heroics but his pragmatism and even his mercenary motivation. Rather than being "realistic" in a gritty way, it was realistic in the sense that the situation that the small force entered was basically impossible and the whole thing ends with some very high prices paid for their success.
I also liked the change in scenery. South Asia needs more exposure, and in this case the idea that a country only heard from when it's natural disaster season was a nice change of pace. Learning that it could be the drug-riddled, violent place as depicted in this film for dramatic purposes puts it into a certain light but also demystifies the setting a bit. I've always wanted to see the Brahmaputra delta and see the main character's bullet-riddled body wind up in it was .. something.
Recommended.
