movie review - Prospect

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Tokyo, 2020.04.25

This is a science fiction movie about a future that feels a lot more realistic than Star Trek ever did. Times are tough, and a father-daughter duo lands on a moon with a contract to secure some of the gems found on that dense jungle planet. Things go badly as the place is already inhabited by quite a retinue of desperadoes. Before long, the father's greed and naivete get him killed and the daughter forms an uneasy relationship with another rando of her father's generation. Will they secure their gems and obtain money to support themselves? Will they get off this hell? Will it all be too much?

Well, this thing posits the questions and puts your through your paces to get any answers. It's a rare science fiction film in not getting too over-the-top and avoiding a heavy reliance on aliens or Big Ideas. I quite enjoyed it and suspect I'll see it again.

Recommended.
