the journal of Michael Werneburg
twenty-seven years and one million words
Today I rode up to the Bermondsey neighborhood to meet a friend and fellow unemployee. It would be a cycle trip on the streets of Toronto without someone honking indignantly that I dared to use the street. In this case, a semi tractor/trailer hauling cars.
My friend is talking about California. I'm pursuing a lead in Tokyo. He has a friend--whose wife hasn't been able to find work in two years--who is talking about "retiring" at 50 to PEI to live on the savings from selling his house until he can work out a second career. All of us are in the technology field: this is how shallow the market for our skills appears to be in this city.
