movie review - Avengement

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Toronto, 2019.09.23

I wasn't sure the title of this one is actually a word, but it is! That out of the way, this is a relentlessly unpleasant movie about one brother's bid to make his gangster brother pay for a large array of crimes ranging from having the vengeful brother imprisoned for seven years to enslaving well over a hundred other people through the threat of violence.

Unfortunately, the story told involves two implausibilities that are hard to overlook. First, there are simply too many gangsters working for the gang leader for the story to have played out as told. Second, the vengeful brother was so very badly beaten for his long years in prison that I seriously doubt he could mastermind the sort of plot he pulled off. These take away from a story that's already straining under a plot-line that's largely told in flashbacks.

Not recommended.

My grandfather once told me that there are two kinds of people: those who work and those who take the credit. He told me to try to be in the first group; there was less competition there.
