movie review - The Meg
the journal of Michael Werneburg
twenty-seven years and one million words
My daughter loves shark attack stuff, so naturally we watched this when the chance came. It's about the return of the Megalodon, an extinct whale-eating group of shark species that survived until about three million years ago. They were built much like a Great White shark, except you could comfortably ride a motorcycle through some of the jaws we have found. They were gigantic, and when I say "whale eating" I mean they literally where the limiting factor on whale species size. In fact it was only due to their sudden extinction due to climate change that whales started getting larger than around the size of a beluga or orca.
But I digress. Meat's back on the menu and humanity is plunged into a desperate struggle. Because we're the dominant species, not some fish. A scientific research site that would have cost billions is the primary scenes of the conflict, though of course plenty of people wind up splashing about in the open sea as well. All kinds of ridiculous scenes come flying at you with this one, and I for one loved it's tone and energy and just-shy-of-stupidity.
Strongly recommended.
I have to hand it to Jason Statham. He did this with exactly the right degree of "who gives a shit, we're going to have some fun" with this one.
