movie review - Asterix - the Secret of the Magic Potion
the journal of Michael Werneburg
twenty-seven years and one million words
This is a charming attempt at bringing the Asterix books from many a Boomer and Gen-X childhood to the flat screen. This one seems to blend a couple of the old books together and does so in a competent-enough way. It's all low-stakes stuff aimed squarely at small children, but at least it's intelligent enough not to bore you (see the Descendants movies) or aggravate you (as Cars will do if you've seen it enough times).
I had the sense that a few things were lost in translation but so it goes. I love "My Neighbor Tottoro" despite knowing that some of the things shoot right by me. I think the difference here is that there's not a lot on-screen to keep an adult's attention.
Recommended. But only for movie night with small kids. Not so with no kids.
