For the first time, I met a colleague I'd worked with remotely for four years - he suggested we meet as he was visiting Toronto. It's amazing how much your knowledge of someone can change after a lot of workplace interaction when you then meet face to face. I've had jobs where I've had many interactions with a person every day and yet knew little about those people. In this case, this was someone who along the way encouraged me to write my first peer-reviewed journal article, so no little impact professionally.
