movie review - Beyond White Space

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Toronto, 2019.05.09

This is a sci-fi piece about a crew that hunts space whales! The crew is comprised of various scruffy types with their own agendas. Which becomes a problem when they're attacked by space pirates! No, space monsters! No, both! One of the agendas is ascension, and that character has it in mind to dive into the white null-space where the whales go. This is basically that guy in "Sunshine" that wants to directly observe the glory in the sun.

Anyway, it's a bit rough in that way that things get when they're trying too hard to be tough. And the CGI is slick in a way that robs some scenes from their gravitas: just a bit too rushed.

That said, I enjoyed it. Recommended. For fans of Sci-Fi on a budget.

rand()m quote

Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.
