cycling in freezing rain

The boss called from the western edge of the city with some urgent news. Knowing that I'd cycled to work, he told me that the snow falling there had turned into freezing rain, and that I should get home before it hit our part of the city. Apparently out in his part of the city it was getting pretty bad indeed. So I hopped on my bike and trekked home under the leading edge of that weather, fighting a ridiculous headwind and stinging ice pellets.
An hour after I got home, it was all clear. I'd timed it perfectly to catch the worst of the passing front!
(Now I have to wonder: had it all been an elaborate practical joke?)
