movie review - The Ballad of Buster Scruggs

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Tokyo, 2018.11.18

This is a series of shorts set in the Wild West of the late 19th Century. Some of the pieces hang together better than others and the overall tone varies wildly. There are many familiar tropes here including the gunslinger, prospecting for precious metals, and the odd handling of death at that time. There was a great deal of fanfare when this came out but with its mix of musical and non-musical elements and its over-indulgence it put me off.

Not recommended.

rand()m quote

A creative person would prefer their music to be stolen and enjoyed than ignored. This is the dilemma for every creative soul: he or she would prefer to starve and be heard than to eat well and be ignored.

—Pete Townshend
