no online gaming with nintendo for my son

My son can't play "Splatoon 2" on his Nintendo Switch because he can't find 8 paying members online. We ponied up for the console, the game, and are now paying for the online service because Nintendo's introduced a pay-for model. My son and his cousin play every day (it's how they keep in touch on other sides of the world) but apparently it's become a ghost town!
