goodbye, great barrier reef

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Toronto, 2017.05.30

So, we've killed the great barrier reef; mission accomplished. I don't really see what all the fuss is about, corals have vanished from the Earth's oceans some seven times, previously. They've always bounced back, even if some times it takes 60 or 100 million years. They'll be fine.

Three reasons to be thankful:

  1. I had a chance to see the 20 million year old Great Barrier Reef back when it was partially alive.
  2. I also had a chance to see the vibrant reefs of Fiji.
  3. And I think this goes without saying after having had dinner with two American colleagues, today: I'm thankful my country isn't (currently) descending into chaos.
