movie review - The Big Short

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Toronto, 2016.03.15

This is a dramatic telling of real events that happened during the Great Financial Crisis. It tells of various parties, winners and losers both, and what happened as the housing market turned out to be a gigantic house of cards. Using interesting asides narrated by celebrities from many walks of life to leaven the dense financial content, the film propels you along a crazy trajectory as different parties learn the realities and of course The Shit Hits the Fan. The cast of this thing are all perfectly on-point, portraying authentic characters (I worked in the industry for much of the decade that ended with the crisis) and conveying an accurate degree of investment in the situation.

A favorite. Strongly recommended.

When destiny comes to a man from outside, it lays him low, just as an arrow lays a deer low. When destiny comes to a man from within, from his innermost being, it makes him strong, it makes him into a god…
