I'm constantly amazed at how difficult it is to break free of the straitjacket of the immediately urgent. That is, the limitations placed on a software organization by the need to meet the immediate goals of profit or even simply meeting current client demand. The two things that suffer as a result are innovation and strategy. And if you listen to Peter Drucker, those are the key activities that define a company.
Happily, this is an area where a number of very smart people are doing some very interesting work in this field.
