movie review - Big Hero 6

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Toronto, 2015.10.12

This is an animated movie set in a near-future San Francisco .. called San Fransokyo. It's a cyberpunk future that glitters and our hero is an orphan named Hiro. He's through high school at 14 and his older brother gets him into a robotics program at university. Not long after, there is a disaster that claims the lives of both Hiro's brother and the professor who was mentoring him. Suddenly alone, our orphan is reeling.

And that's when he discovers the autonomous robot that his brother had been working on. The thing doesn't say much, but it has a spongy or balloon body over whatever frame and electronics make it work, and the boy starts to treat it like his big brother. And when our hero and his friends realize that the fire that killed the two men was caused by someone, they band together to be a high-tech team and fight crime. Criiiiime!

I enjoyed the endearing tone and the engaging story and action. The animation style is pleasing, and the characters fun.

Strongly recommended.

I think a more appropriate first exercise for a burgeoning programmer in training would be:

system.out.println ("Goodbye World");
