a pike under placid water

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Victoria Harbour, 2015.08.15

The water was dead calm, so I paddled across the bay to a small island that's littered with fish scales, crab claws, and cormorant crap. The island proved to be surrounded by algae (too much cormorant crap, causing algal blooms) and mosquitoes (feeding on the birds). So I got the hell out of there.

I caught one fish early in the morning – a 30cm pike that was slimy and very actively resisted my efforts to throw it back in the water.

Then I worked, taking care of the appliances and the phrag and loading the car with some salvageable lumber.

In the afternoon, the cousins showed up. In the evening, we attended the annual neighborhood bash. It was a fine day.
