movie review - Safety Not Guaranteed

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Toronto, 2015.02.07

This is a quirky science fiction piece about some journalists who decide to check out a weirdo inventor who is working on a time travel device. The title comes from the odd wanted ad he places in the paper, "Safety Not Guaranteed". The young journalists soon find themselves embroiled in a handful of adventures as it all unfolds, with a heavy incidence of romance among these adventures. It's not until the very final scene that the question is resolved as to whether there actually is a time travel machine, and I have to say I really liked the way they handled this thing. It also occurred to me that the title relates as much to the individual journeys of the journalists as to the proposed time travel expedition. I see what you did there, writers.

I was so struck by how well the actors in this thing played off each other that I looked it up and learned that the script was written with the specific actors in mind.

Strongly recommended.
