gung hay fat choy MacKenzie clan!

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-eight years and a million words

Toronto, 2014.02.06

At a Chinese New Year's party this past weekend I met someone who, like my mother's family, has connections to the MacKenzies of "Middle River" in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. We decided to put our family genealogists (her father; my mother) in touch to see what they could learn. It turns out that my family's been here for many decades longer. Ah well, worth a try. My mum did manage to dig up some interesting photos of the other woman's family, however. Stern, early-twentieth-century portraits of stern, stern Scotsfolk.

rand()m quote

It has always seemed strange to me...The things we admire in men, kindness and generosity, openness, honesty, understanding and feeling, are the concomitants of failure in our system. And those traits we detest, sharpness, greed, acquisitiveness, meanness, egotism and self-interest, are the traits of success. And while men admire the quality of the first they love the produce of the second.

—John Steinbeck, Cannery Row
