movie review - Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Toronto, 2013.09.11

This is the sequel to the original Transformers movie from 2007, which was entertaining. I saw that one in the cinema, before I had kids. Sigh.

Anyway, this thing is a complete mess. It reverses the supposedly momentous death of the Big Bad in the previous movie, and introduces a new Uber Boss to cannon. He doesn't survive, needless to say.

What has survived in abundance is product placement, it's very prominent in this piece, to the point of being a distraction. For someone who muted all commercials in the commercial television age, I find this appalling. Two other things worsen this movie over the first: I can't tell any of the "transformers" apart; and the pace has accelerated to that it's a problem.

But it's the story that's the main problem. There's so much going on, and it sometimes comes across like they've forgotten what they're doing. Like when the parents pop up in Egypt and I'd forgotten they were in it and can't recall anything explaining how they got there.

Not recommended.

rand()m quote

It's difficult in times like these: ideals, dreams and cherished hopes rise within us, only to be crushed by grim reality. It's a wonder I haven't abandoned all my ideals, they seem so absurd and impractical. Yet I cling to them because I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart.
