pigeon trapped in a window

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Toronto, 2013.03.21

You know how a fly will get in through an open window and be unable to get out again? I witnessed that today with a pigeon. High on the fourth floor of the crumbling old building that houses the "Jilly's" strip-joint at Broadview and Queen an open window had let in a pigeon. It was caught between the glass and a blind (it seems people live in that building, or that it's a flop-house of some description) and was struggling to get out.

There was a happy ending, this time - the bird managed to find its way out again.

I wanted to exclaim and point out the bird's struggle to the people sitting around me on the streetcar, but I decided it wouldn't be well-received in that sort of grim commuter crowd. Nothing is.
