Takachiho gorge

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Takachiho, Kyushu, 2012.12.25

Today we travelled with Mari's parents to Takachiho gorge in the north-west corner of Kyushu. It was beautiful. One of the finest river gorge systems I've ever seen, a hike in which every twist and turn led to new "ooos" and "ahhs". The gorge is cut into some very hard crystalline basalt. That river has really had its work cut out for it.

In the evening we then went to a shrine and watched a dance performance of an old story of the antics of the gods in Japan. The last dance told the tale of the marriage of the two gods who founded the country, and their happy marriage. Ken somehow fell asleep, but between the drumming and the vocal outbursts it was watching that kept me alert.
