going to Tokyo

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-eight years and a million words

Toronto, 2012.09.05

Tonight I met with a young fellow who's planning his first dose of overseas living; in Tokyo.

His questions, his assumptions, and his plans all took me back. Back to the days before living in Australia, which I was doing at around the same age he is now.

We'd been introduced by a common friend who thought this fellow could learn from my checkered past. My advice boiled down to: "Try to find a job before you arrive. You'll have enough distractions when you arrive, finding work will be insanely difficult."

rand()m quote

It may be that when we no longer know what to do we have come to our real work, and that when we no longer know which way to go we have come to our real journey. The mind that is not baffled is not employed. The impeded stream is the one that sings.
