the boy's bike is a hit

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Toronto, 2012.07.02

This weekend I started teaching Kenny how to ride his first pedal-bike; by this evening he was riding unassisted.

Well, for short stretches of 5-10 meters of unobstructed sidewalk, anyway.

The kid's been on quite a tear of late, it's like having a younger sibling around has made him realize that he's no longer The Baby and in fact has already come far. One day he's amazing us by telling us how words are spelled or how small numbers add up; the next day he's drawing detailed scenes from a movie he saw once a month prior; then he's riding a bike with some ability and no assistance (well, except for stopping, he seems to think that bikes are to be exited the way a flaming plane is).

I'm pleased I put the effort into the bike. I think part of the reason he's interested is that I made a unique bike for him.
