kenny and the compass

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-eight years and a million words

Toronto, 2012.03.02

Recently, I've been buying some camping and SHTF/eotwawki preparation gear. One parcel arrived with a gift from the vendor - a small key fob with a compass.

I explained the compass to Kenny and showed him that the red needle always pointed in one direction no matter which way he could turn the thing. I could see that he was reading the bearings on the compass, so I asked him on a whim a question that I thought might be tricky. "Kenny, can you find the 'SE' on the compass?" This should have been the trickiest question, because he knows E, W, and N from his name.

Immediately, he turned the compass so that the red needle pointed to 'SE'.

rand()m quote

Remove everything that has no relevance to the story. If you say in the first chapter that there is a rifle hanging on the wall, in the second or third chapter it absolutely must go off. If it's not going to be fired, it shouldn't be hanging there.

—Anton Chekhov
