movie review - The Hangover

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Toronto, 2011.08.13

This is a movie about four friends who head to Las Vegas for a bachelor party. Things get badly out of hand, not in the usual excess of drugs and prostitution but in the sudden disappearance of one of their members and the rest having no recollection of the night. Reeling from their own memory loss (and other losses) the friends have a disconcerting time trying to piece together what's happened.

This movie has plenty of outrage and excess, but also enough intelligence and charm to carry off the premise with far more capability than it might appear as described on paper. I enjoyed this far more than I expected and think it's more than the movie that was advertised and more than people seem to talk about.

Recommended. I am so, so glad this isn't another Harry Potter movie, not that I'm done with my friend's copies of those movies.

Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.
