another theft on the TTC

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Toronto, 2011.06.16

One of my coworkers bought herself a new smart phone yesterday. It was stolen from her today.

The theft occurred on a crowded TTC bus while she dozed. She's shocked that it happened, of course, and naturally the TTC is unable to do anything about it.

To add insult to injury, the mobile company of course refuses to change the contract and insists that she either continue to pay it or buy a new smart phone (they won't allow a purchase of a cheaper phone). To say that she's unhappy is to put it mildly.

Toronto has changed quite a bit.

rand()m quote

The man who lies to himself and listens to his own lie comes to such a pass that he cannot distinguish the truth within him, or around him, and so loses all respect for himself and for others. And having no respect he ceases to love, and in order to occupy and distract himself without love he gives way to passions and coarse pleasures, and sinks to bestiality in his vices, all from continual lying to other men and to himself.

—Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Brothers Karamazov
